THE EMERGENCE OF METRO DECO
Recently included as an emerging trend in Architectural Digest’s Ultra Luxury Kitchen 2021 report, the Clive Christian Furnitre Metro Deco collection is one of our most popular, with demand at an all-time high.
In creating the Metro Deco collection, our ambition was to stay true to the Clive Christian Furniture ethos and produce a truly opulent, handcrafted door but with a refined, simplified style. The design was meticulously considered, with the introduction of an inlay transforming each cabinet front into a showcase for rich, exotic veneer.
This collection was particularly significant for Clive Christian Furniture, representing a very different approach to what had been done previously - a flat panel door, with a design language that encouraged a more contemporary setting. With a new outlook, we set to reviewing what makes our furniture truly Clive Christian Furniture – the finest woodworking using the very best of materials, carried out by experienced, highly skilled craftsmen.
The sleek new design required a new furniture finish and, in turn, process. The simplified door style presented a blank canvas where the natural timber would take centre stage, so it needed to be exceptional. Walnut ticked every box so was added to our palette as the finish of choice for this collection. To enhance the natural complexity, we opted for a bespoke dyed material which encapsulates the grain formation beautifully.
With such a vivid base note, the door required a suitably dramatic accent banding. Traditionally we have realised such an effect with strings of Golden Movingui or Figured Sycamore, but here strong metallic materials felt like the natural progression for this product. Brushed Brass or Stainless Steel is channel cut and delicately hand-pressed into each door, neatly mitred to each corner, creating a beautiful balance of natural and engineered appeal.
This collection, with its clear, classic shape, was designed with metropolitan living in mind. When all elements came together, the combination of sharp, angular lines, rich materials and fine craftsmanship had the unmistakeable aura of Art Deco. With due attention lavished on the fine details and finishing, this collection epitomised the luxury, glamour and exuberance of the Art Deco movement, whilst maintaining an understated, contemporary feel - so it was christened Metro Deco.
Since its release, we have applied the styling to a variety of tailored interiors from kitchens and dressing rooms to bedrooms, studies and vanities. As with any Clive Christian Furniture installation, personalisation and bespoke elements can be commissioned by clients, with perhaps the most memorable incarnation being an inlay, pieced in hand-cut mother of pearl – the embodiment of opulence!
